Employment

While infamous for its staggering unemployment rates, Gaza remains a hub of originality, grit, and creativity.

It is a popularly-held belief, perhaps even a well-established fact that Gazans are among some of the most resilient people on earth. However, people must avoid complimenting the people of Gaza as a means of avoiding the harsh realities of life in Gaza. While Gazans should be celebrated for their creative attempts to counter the Strip’s unemployment, it is also important that readers recognize how dire the unemployment issue in Gaza is.

Unemployment has been a longstanding challenge in Gaza, with rates consistently high due to limited economic opportunities. In 2022, the unemployment rate in Gaza stood at approximately 50%, making it one of the highest in the world. More specifically, the unemployment rate among youth aged 19–29 holding an intermediate diploma or higher was nearly 75%.1

This dire employment situation in Gaza  has forced many Gazans to seek alternative sources of income to sustain themselves and their families. In response to the lack of traditional employment opportunities, a growing number of individuals have turned to online work, including freelancing or even offering art commissions. Despite the adversity they face, Gazans have demonstrated resilience and determination, leveraging their skills and creativity to generate income through various online platforms and social media channels.

The shift towards online work reflects Gazans’ entrepreneurial spirit and adaptability in the face of adversity. By tapping into their talents and developing marketable skills, Gazans have been able to carve out opportunities for themselves in the digital economy. Whether it’s offering graphic design services, writing content, or selling handmade crafts, Gazans are finding innovative ways to generate income and support themselves financially. This not only provides a sense of empowerment and autonomy but also contributes to the broader economic resilience of the community. In a challenging environment where traditional employment is scarce, online work has emerged as a lifeline for many Gazans, offering hope for a brighter future and greater economic stability.
