Gazans know the seasons of the plants, when they can harvest said plants, and the plethora of dishes, drinks, and medicines they can make with them.
Waraq ‘enab/dawali (grape leaves) is a dish Gazans are fond of, and a popular choice for their first iftar meal (check out #greenforgaza to learn more!). It made us realize… perhaps we should mention what season it is now…
The above clips are from one year ago. May 2023. It was grape leaves picking season. That means it should—and would—be grape leaves picking season right now. In Gaza, this season usually starts in March and lasts a few months, how long exactly depends on each type of grape tree (and this is something the locals know).
Grapes season should also be upon us. It starts in the middle of May. But, who could harvest leaves or fruit when a g€nocid£ is taking place!?
Sharing these facts takes a Gazan back seven months… back to October, as olive season usually begins in late October. Harvesting and pressing olives is central to Gazan culture, economy, and life. But, due to the ongoing horrors Gazans face, they have been robbed of the ability to plant, harvest, and live.
Even if it is painful, we believe it crucial that we Gazans share all that we know of our land. Every kernel of knowledge we possess regarding the land is a testament to the fact that it is indeed our land. We should celebrate this fact and the beauty of our land!
